Holding on, acrylic on canvas (2023)

Artist Statement

This project was originally initiated by a class project. The 30x32 piece was inspired by a childhood best friend. Growing up and apart from someone who knows every little thing about you, you try to hold onto that feeling, that person, for as long as you can. It can feel lonely stepping into a new environment and knowing no one knows you like they did. Sometimes the best thing to do is to say goodbye to that person, and try to build new connections, instead of holding onto the ones you used to have.

The process for this piece of art was educational. I learned how to build my own canvas, nailing the wood together, glueing and stretching the canvas onto the frame, and sanding/prepping it. I learned about the effort it took to make a whole piece of art entirely from scratch and have a new appreciation of it.
